The devil, as they say,

January 27, 2020

is in the details. Take this plywood clad kitchen. No moldings or unnecessary trim, illumination provided by minimalist ceiling mounted sockets with silvered bulbs, seamlessly integrated stainless steel top and back splash and a near invisible flush mounted exhaust fan. simplequietmodern perfection. The simplicity of the design elevates the humble plywood to an entirely new level. I can see a similar stunning end result if the ply were swapped out for OSB, providing an equally elegant color and texture. All that’s needed is a place to perch while you wait for the pot to come to a boil or the oven timer to go off. Arne Jacobson’s 1955 High Dot Counter Stool, in black steel and leather, is light enough to compliment without distraction.

New Year…New Inspiration

January 7, 2016

It can come from anywhere. Take OSB…Oriented Strand Board. An engineered wood particle board formed by adding adhesives to layers of wood flakes and then compressing them. Used in construction in an unsung supporting role for years, OSB’s good looks provide a modern, natural feel when used front and center as a flooring or wall treatment alternative. And, it’s more cost-effective than plywood, so it might be worth considering on your next project. You might just save enough to pick up a little treat like this vintage 1969 Eames Executive Chair.

Gimme Shelter

July 14, 2013

And, a little deck to get my vitamin D on and I’m good to go.  A simple Monopoly game shaped structure…it can’t get any simpler than that…just enough of a terraced deck and a view stretching out over a gently waving meadow. Take a deep breath and leave the weeks ” crazies” behind. It’s another summer weekend get-a-way. Still, I’m not a fan of the steeply pitched roof, it’s the comforting  shape and the warmth of the dark gray wood exterior that  draws me in. The interior here is intentionally spartan, fully wrapped in OSB that provides a great natural finish that draws from the grassy exterior views…and simply appointed, making it adaptable as guest cottage, gathering place or studio. Too bad it’s located in the UK…I was just about to start loading the car.50b92a1eb3fc4b2a3f0000f7_stealth-barn-carl-turner-architects_-c-_tim_crocker_stealth_barn-2908_copy-528x35250b92a48b3fc4b2a3f0000f9_stealth-barn-carl-turner-architects_-c-_tim_crocker_stealth_barn-2339_copy-528x352
