Pull Up A Seat

October 8, 2021

I have never been a fan of barstools. At least tall barstools. I’ve always felt more comfortable in a chair. However, more often than not , I slip off to my office to check an email or  pay a bill while I’m in the middle of preparing dinner only to come back to the stove to disaster. This could have been easily averted had I chosen to not only use a mobile device, but, if I had a counter height stool on which to perch….one eye on the pot. I’ve got no excuse to finding a counter height stool that meets my design sensibility as there are now countless modern options available…be they new introductions or adjustments to their original midcentury incarnations. Below are five of my simplequietmodern favorites.

Make a Wish

November 16, 2018

If you were hoping Hans Wegner’s iconic C-24 ” Wishbone” chair was available in more than the 105 options already offered, you’ve gotten your wish. For a limited time Carl Hansen & Sons is offering the C-24 in a special edition in celebration of their 110th birthday. Available in eight colors with a natural paper cord seat, this specially priced limited edition will only be available until the end of this year. So many choices. That didn’t complicate the decision making did it?

Better like this?

June 10, 2016

Or, better like this? ” A chair is to have no backside. It should be beautiful from all sides and angles.” to quote Hans J. Wegner. And who’s going to argue with the designer himself?  Clearly, this icon of mid-century modern Danish design draws you in, front to back. The Ej100 Ox Chair, 1960.

“If only…

August 21, 2014

…you could design just one good chair in your life… But you simply cannot”. Apparently, when Hans Wegner spoke those words in 1952 he was right, designing over 500 chairs in the course of his lifetime. We are all familiar with some, as they have become icons of  mid twentieth century Danish design. Others never got past the prototype stage, until now. In celebration of his 100th birthday, PP Mobler has re-issued a collection of Mr. Wegner’s best known designs, as well as a few that were never produced. You could base an entire project around these two.

Pitch Perfect

September 15, 2013

What’s simplequietmodern and has perfect pitch? It’s gotta be Hans Wegner’s c44 .  Designed in 1951, this icon of mid-century modern Danish design is still in production today. The solid wood construction and woven paper seat have an almost Shaker appeal and simplicity, yet it’s the pitch of the back and seat that invite you to sit a while. Available in over two dozen finish and seat combinations it might be hard to decide which will work best in your space. And, to confuse the issue even more, there is an available seat and back cushion with seemingly endless textile options.  My mind is made up. I’ll have a pair in white oil on oak with the natural cord seat…hold the upholstery.
