Changing Colors

October 1, 2018

Heath Ceramics started producing its first dinnerware line, Coupe, in their factory in Sausalito in 1948. Seventy years later, this iconic collection of plates, bowls, cups and accessory pieces, designed by Edith Heath, is still being produced in the original factory. To mark this milestone, Heath is refreshing the Coupe line with new colors and glazes while archiving and retiring others. It’s a great time to pick up on those before they are gone or to experiment by mixing some of the new palette into your existing collection. Some of the fresh modern neutrals include rosemary, salt/shadow and zinc… with brighter shades like moonstone, yuzu/fawn and persimmon/ pumpkin adding a little simplequietmodern punctuation if your feeling so inclined.

Perfect Timing

June 11, 2018

After a Winter that seemed endless and the shortest Spring ever, the timing is perfect for Heath Ceramics Summer Seasonal collection. From our favorite bud vases in Wildflower, Zinnia and Black Plum to the debut of new glazes like Sunset Fade on the Deep Serving Bowl and Sorbet on the Multi Stem Vase, it’s clear from where the inspiration was drawn..Summer flowers in pinks and oranges, glorious Summer sunsets and juicy late Summer fruits.

Just Starting That List

December 13, 2017

or, tying things up? Either way a few gift suggestions couldn’t hurt. Smaller personal gifts seem to really hit the mark, even more so if that gift was made by you. So, I’ve included some DIY ideas as well.

A homemade hand cream would be welcome by anyone who works with their hands or is feeling the effects of Winter already. Simply blending a base of beeswax and olive oil with essential oils of peppermint, eucalyptus and wintergreen… your gifts will be ready to give in no time. Perfect for getting into all of those nooks and crannies. What gardener wouldn’t love this hand rake?  Photo:https://www.shopterrain.com/fall%2Dcleanup/sneeboer%2Dhand%2Dleaf%2Ddebris%2Drake/searchString/Hand%20rake

Pom Pom or not, everybody loves  a cap. A quick knit project like this could have you completing several before the 25 th. Photo: https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2016/10/17/basic-hats-for-everyone-in-new-colors/

A simple modern knit, this Elementary Wrap from Purl Soho might just be the project to take the edge off all of the holiday stress. And, the end result will find you not only relaxed, but with another gift checked off of that list. Photo:  http://www.purlsoho.com/create/2017/10/20/elementary-wrap/

For the design obsessed, it doesn’t get any more simplequietmodern than the work of icon Eero Saarinen. photo: http://needsupply.com/saarinen.html

Easily broken down into three separate gifts or two gifts and one for you…this trio of bud vases from Heath Ceramics in their Winter Seasonal glazes of Arctic, Shell White and Sequoia  Fair warning, when they’re gone they’re gone. photo: http://www.heathceramics.com/winter-seasonal/bud-vase-set-12

Irresistible, and so simple. Cayenne Maple Glazed Walnuts…a little sweet, a little heat.. Photo: gp    https://simplequietmodern.com/2013/11/30/mmmm-maplely/

You can gild that lily by presenting those walnuts in this Heath Ceramic Deep Serving Bowl. There won’t be any re-gifting here. Photo: http://www.heathceramics.com/cook-dine/bowls/deep-serving-bowl-110

What girl wouldn’t love the simplicity of semi- precious gemstone beads lovingly strung into this assortment of necklaces? Each Gemstone & Knots kit from Purl Soho makes 4 necklaces in the designs shown, and is available in nine color ways. Photo: https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2017/11/29/gemstones-knots-necklaces/

I received this mysterious blend of cypress wood and incense years ago and it’s been my signature fragrance ever since. Even Jaxon enjoys a spritz to start his day. L’Occitane Eau des Baux. January 3, 2016

Four years, 415 posts and hundreds of photos… it’s time to celebrate as we move into year five of simplequietmodern. Reviewing the last year you have surprised me yet again by digging into the archives and making some of the earliest posts the ones you favored most in 2015. So cheers to you my readers, followers and friends. Thank you for taking the time to stop by, get inspired, leave a comment and inspire me.

Small Gifts

December 15, 2015

Small gifts always seem to make the best gifts. You are thought of fondly by the recipient with every use. Better yet, small gifts don’t need to break the bank to make a lasting impression. Here are a few simplequietmodern suggestions should your shopping list have a few entries that need to be checked off. There’s still time…get crackin.

Switching it up

November 19, 2015

While I will usually go for a simple Thanksgiving table decorated with Bosc pears, nuts in their shells and oak leaves , I’m thinking I might just switch things up a bit. Heath Ceramics dinnerware in basalt and linen, blown Polo roses and a tangle of Tallowberry will keep it simplequietmodern with a chalky neutral palette. Now that that’s taken care of let’s see if I can simplify dinner without any sacrifices.

Like It or Not

October 20, 2015

Well, I’m ” falling” into it without a fight. Fall that is. It’s been so much like Summer I had forgotten all about the change in seasons until today. Like someone flipping a switch the sky has grayed, the breeze has cooled and leaves have gone all red and golden. There is simplequietmodern Autumn inspiration around every turn.

Where’s that list?

December 12, 2014

I find it’s easy to refer back to gifts that I have received and have enjoyed when trying to come up with a gift idea for someone else. While most of them could easily fall into that “stocking stuffer” category budget wise, you’ll hear down the road that their impact was greater than something more extravagant. Really…it’s the small things that make the difference, don’t you think?

A journal or sketch book…always a clean sheet at hand. The perfect place to record a thought, a plan, a sketch, a dream.

Ras el Hanout…Mix up a batch of this Moroccan spice blend from the recipe found here.http://www.sbs.com.au/food/recipes/ras-el-hanout While great in meat, vegetable and cous cous recipes, you might include this recipe for Roasted Cauliflower soup to get things started.  http://www.kirstenjohnstone.com/2012/10/roast-cauliflower-soup/

Heath holiday tall modern cups…ruby red inside, red suede outside. Peppermint hot chocolate will feel right at home, as would coffee, tea or a fistful of tulips or winterberry. You’ll be thought of with every use.

Clementines, cloves and snow…really. “Winter” fragrance 3 wick candle at Bath and Body Works.

Deerskin gardening gloves…indispensible. Protection for your hands when gardening or to keep in the car in the event you make an unplanned stop at the nursery. I’m never without a pair…or two.

blkwhtyrn

Luxurious yarn in a gift card from Purl Soho, Jimmy Beans Wool or Yarn.com.  Who wouldn’t be excited with a gift of cashmere, merino wool or alpaca? And, for the fiber freak…it’s all about the picking. It’s almost like two gifts.

wisksm6

The mini wisk. I received this one as a gift years ago and it’s still in my top 5 favorite utensils.

The “Ropey”…who’s special kid wouldn’t love a new one?

All Set

August 24, 2014

And, ready for anything. Soups, pastas, salads…coffee, chai latte or warm cider. What more do you need? One large simple shallow bowl and an accomodating cup will take you from breakfast to dinner and back again. Add a handknit linen lapkin and you are ready to strap on that simplequietmodern feedbag. Think of how many cupboards you’ve emptied by bringing your dining experience back to what’s absolutely essential.

Separated at Birth

August 11, 2014

Is it me or are these two products related? What is the likelihood of seeing such similar characteristics in totally unrelated materials like this mens Hermes scarf and this box of packing material used by Heath ceramics? I’m also seeing a little of Picasso’s Guernica in the mix as well…anyone else?
