Shifting Gears

October 11, 2018

Fall. Time to turn up the heat, spice things up, enjoy the seasons bounty and get ready to adjust our mindset before Winter and the holidays are upon us.

Some simple inspiration to make the seque, top to bottom.

Terra cotta petals with a cream backside… the Leonidas rose. Picture perfect as Mother Nature changes everything around us.

Exotic spice blends like Zaatar and Ras el Hanout bring a little something special and exotic to everyday eats.

The perfect fiber blend to bridge all of the seasons, Purl Soho’s  Flax Down… Baby Alpaca, superfine Merino and Linen, worked together with their Linen Quill in True Turquoise. https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2018/09/05/swath-wrap/

Flor samples for consideration for a pending Winter project. Neutrals are great but a plaid underfoot might just be fun. https://www.flor.com

On a weekend night of binge watching, a Texican dinner of Chili Verde will transport you to the southwest and warm you up. https://simplequietmodern.com/2015/10/27/a-little-needed-comfort/

Locally.grown and processed apples and apple cider…the Fall possibilities are endless and not to be missed. What’s your pleasure? A cocktail of Bourbon and cider or apple pie for breakfast?

Like It or Not

October 20, 2015

Well, I’m ” falling” into it without a fight. Fall that is. It’s been so much like Summer I had forgotten all about the change in seasons until today. Like someone flipping a switch the sky has grayed, the breeze has cooled and leaves have gone all red and golden. There is simplequietmodern Autumn inspiration around every turn.

The scale of this burlap weave gives some indication of how tiny this found nest actually is. What  might you discover on a walk around your yard or neighborhood?  And, if you have an idea as to what small bird called this home, let me know.

The local  farm stands are loaded with the seasons bounty. Skip the crowds at the cider mill and pick up an armload of beets, take ’em home and roast ’em up  or turn them into a soup for the week ahead.

A chill in the air calls for wool…maybe a cap…maybe in hand dyed Autumn reds.

Starting to collect and recycle packaging materials now will save you from picking up a few tacky rolls of gift wrap closer to the holidays. I’m thinking this expanded kraft paper is going to be the perfect addition to my classic crisp white tissue. It’s looking pretty modern to me.

This Lingham stone always seems to move to a more visible location in the Fall so that I can better enjoy it’s unique natural colorations. A quick spin and edit of your interior accessories will have everything looking new as you start to spend more time inside.

Coffee Break rose, left to dry to a new kind of beautiful, will continue to add interest throughout the Fall, into Thanksgiving…possibly even Christmas. Start by enjoying then drying them now and they’ll be ready to put into service again when the time comes.

Creative block…

to color block. It could be the simplequietmodern solution to the earlier challenge. A richly textured, richly colored new wool blanket split asymmetrically in two. Let’s see what develops.

Maybe an Indian Summer

September 21, 2013

An Indian Summer would be nice, now that we’re moving into Fall and this past Summer was…well…odd. Looking back at the gray rainy days and looking forward with hopes for some bright, crisp, dry days ahead. A drive in the country, maybe some baking, switching out the summer T-shirts for a cozy sweater and raking leaves instead of weeding all mark the official end of summer and the beginning of the harvest as the earth takes a big stretch, a yawn and prepares for another long rest. A great time to take a little look back and a glance forward.

The view from inside most of this last summer.

Not new in white, but sometimes they make the right modern statement, especially in this large flattened shape.

A fall color tour or an impromptu picnic would not be complete without this Woolrich Allegheny Throw. How great is that orange stitching? http://needsupply.com/mens/allegheny-throw-in-oxford.html

A nest of simplequietmodern bowls to help whip up or serve some Autumn inspired eats. http://www.crateandbarrel.com/best-and-buys/best-and-buys-entertaining/5-piece-roscoe-bowl-set/f52751

The last of summers peaches in a simple comforting crostada…I guess apples are next.

A little Merino wool, silk and linen in charcoal worked up into a quick ribbed cap gives the seasons knit projects a kick-start.

A little local color…it’s actually been changing here since the middle of August,

Roasted red grapes, red onion and farro…the start of what is now my new favorite Autumn salad.

A bit of Sedum cut for simple long lasting indoor display.

Fall Back

November 2, 2012

Now we’re moving into the graying image that is Fall’s second act. Changing intensities of light, neutralized color, texture and material will be peaking my interests and guiding me creatively through the next two months. Turning the clock back an hour seems like a simple action, yet the very next day everything looks different…quiet somehow. A “palate cleanser” perhaps before we gear up for the holidays that lie ahead.

You might try a visit to these links for some additional Autumn inspiration.
