Until next year…

January 8, 2012

when we carefully unpack these vintage gems again…wondering about the families they came from, each Christmas they brightened and the “sophisticate” who was so fashion forward as to select PINK as their Christmas color story in 1950 something. Do you suppose there were pink toothpicks in the cheese cubes as well? I know there was at least some pink champagne…and hey, champange of any color works for me.

Lights out

Epiphany. January 6th.Time to take down the Christmas decorations. Simple as that. Easy in my case. Two strings of ice-like lights hung in long verticles struck the perfect  note. Simple, quiet, modern…. very effective.

California Dreamin

January 4, 2012

All the leaves are brown…and the sky is gray. Must be why I was attracted to this skein of Berroco Boboli. Multi colored? Wha?   Add some cashmere, linen, merino and hemp…swatch it up and hope for the best. The result looks surprisingly woven, not unlike some great textured Mid Century textile produced by the likes of Knoll or Herman Miller. Mad as I might sometimes be…no, I will not be knitting enough fabric to cover a chair.  I’m guessing a blanket once it’s on the sticks. Stay tuned.

Banana Fana Wha ?

January 4, 2012

OK…I did NO baking over the holidays so there was no excuse not to whip something simple up from a surplus of ripe bananas. Luckily I found this recipe card from Starbucks to help. Easy enough to accomplish with hand utensils ( my favorite being this olive wood paddle/spoon/? from Williams-Sonoma)…no power needed in prep.  And 45-60 minutes later your have this beauty! Simple enough. Quiet enough.

A quick note: I in no way had the two tablespoons of buttermilk…but, half and half with a splash of cider vinegar stood in nicely. Again, simple.

What a steal…

It’s amazing what $1.99 will get you when you check out the ” manager’s special” buckets in the floral dept. at Kroger. Run them home and pull out one of the cylinder vases that is a  simplequietmodern must have. Strip off the foliage and gather the heads into a tight domed arrangement and tie the bundle together with some jute twine ( or even black electrical tape in a pinch). Cut the stems so the mound sets gently on the rim of the cylinder and you are done and done. All this style for a whopping two bucks.

2012…let’s get started

January 4, 2012

Simple …quiet…modern.   That’s what I like. Whether it’s architecture and design, fashion or food, you can never go wrong with a choice that is simple..quiet…modern.

A gift recieved this Christmas illustrates this point perfectly. A box. An egg. Bronze. Matte exterior. Polished interior. Simple. Elegant. Useful. Beautiful. Classic.
