Finally…

June 1, 2014

it’s seeming like we might have a Summer…maybe a little different than usual, but Summer just the same. So, what’s inspiring me now?

A great place to fall out and relax on a hot summer day. Does it get any better than affordable teak? It’ll still take me a while to shake the chill from the last two seasons, so, a little Summer cashmere from James Perse is on my “gotta have some” list. http://www.jamesperse.com/men/collections/summer-cashmere/lightweight-cashmere-v-neck/viewProduct.do?productId=prod1790117&categoryId=cat1230006

Just in Case

May 21, 2014

It’s always good to have an alternate plan. So as I anticipate the upcoming holiday weekend I have put into place Plan B…just in case. A little inspiration from a modernist weaving by textile artist Anni Albers and a few skeins of pima cotton have me set and ready to go should the weather take an unpleasant turn.

Test Drive

April 27, 2014

So I’ve created yards upon yards of my newsprint yarn. Next? An appropriate needle for its super bulky size. A quick trip to Amazon, a few bucks and a couple of days later, and I have this great birch circular… in a chubby size 36. They seem to be made for each other this yarn and these sticks. One skein in and the resulting  fabric is showing great  promise with both its color and texture. I’m not sure where this is going , but I think it’s going to be an interesting ride.

is good news. Which, in fact , should leave us with a surplus of blank newsprint. Combine a few sheets of that with a couple of “snow” days, a McGuyver rigged spindle and some scissors and you have got yourself a great way to ” get away”…get out of your own head for a bit. The result?  Newsprint yarn, a relaxed constitution and perhaps a solution to some problem that’s been needing attention. Is “spinning” like yoga? Could be. At the very least it provides some peace and quiet, gentle rhythm and some time to think.

Instead of seeing red,

February 9, 2014

I’m starting to see what appears to be a bit of blue peeking out of a darkly clouded sky. Yet more snow again this morning  has me focusing on simplequietmodern white inspiration that will take my mind off of the weather for now. And, that little hint of blue, aqua really, might just have me considering a new addition to my completely neutral surroundings. Maybe it’ll help you too.

Charles Pollock’s CP1 Lounge Chair marks his first new design release in the U.S. in nearly 50 years. Available in tufted leather or felt on a frame of stainless steel the CP1 captures all of the sex appeal of a classic Jaguar convertible. http://hivemodern.com/pages/product6560/bernhardt-design-charles-pollock-cp1-lounge-chair

Until we’re ready for a shift to Daylight Savings Time there will be plenty of gray days ahead. Almost as snowy and sparkly as the view outside, this super chunky “Pixie Dust” by Knit Collage Yarns will knit up fast on some giant needles. A quick tour of the yard with your pruners could provide a branch or two of flowering Quince to force in this bulb vase from Heath. That’ll do nicely until the tulips are up and ready to cut and bring in. http://www.heathceramics.com/catalog/product/view/id/975/s/bulb-vase-8/category/40/#p147

Koishe one

January 26, 2014

Like raked gravel in a zen garden, this project was a study in calm. Koishe one is done. What could have been balls of black linen yarn sitting indefinitely until inspiration struck, this modern knit linen blanket almost rose on it’s own from the remnants of the aborted sweater project from last fall. It seems that once the yarn was doubled and a suitable stitch pattern revealed itself, it was all done except for the knitting. And, the pattern being what it was, that went quickly as well. The end result was even better than I had imagined; beautiful hand , weight and drape with a richly textured bobble on one side reversing to a deep ridge on the other. I’m starting to think that this is what that yarn wanted to be all along. I should have known. What could be more simplequietmodern than a black linen blanket?

Or, more accurately, pre-order now for February 2014 shipment before the second run sells out too. This piece, by Zaishu… a slot together table/stool…is a collaboration between Australian photographer/designer Matthew Butler and architect/designer Kirsten Johnstone. The image of her wool knit fabric has been applied to his sustainable plywood panels to great effect. Plywood and wool…hard and soft. Insert tab A into slot B and put to beautiful good use. Now what could be more simplequietmodern than that?

Another year over…

January 1, 2014

and a new one just begun.* The perfect time to be grateful for the good of the last year and set forth on a new and creative path for the next twelve months. Not one prone to the making and breaking of resolutions, I have always found that committing things to paper…notes, bits of inspiration, plans for upcoming projects, events or personal goals…can not only organize your thoughts, but gives you a resource to refer back to and evaluate your progress. A hardbound sketchbook or journal is always my simplequietmodern must have, although a designated project pad can do the trick. Keep it handy to jot down a thought, tuck in a bit of inspiration or flip back to enjoy each progressive step. The clock for 2014 has started ticking. On your mark….get set….

What could have been a disaster rose from the ashes of a failed project to become Koishi one… one big, thick and richly textured linen blanket.

This sculpture greets and inspires me daily. Created completely of recycled LA Times newsprint, it brings home the idea that the great beauty can be found in the most humble material.

The found nests in my yard pale in comparison to this Australian example captured by my friend Kirsten Johnstone. It’s easy to see how it’s texture, form and structure caught her architects eye. http://www.kirstenjohnstone.com/blog/

The best part of my everyday…the “Hambone” Jaxon. The full-out belly laughs he induces daily are the best gift one could hope to receive.

Staring me down from a basket on the corner of my desk, these two yarns in gray and olive seemed to want to work together. Looking good so far.

The beginnings of a great Winter salad of Farro, roasted red grapes and red onions. I’ll post the simplified Martha recipe soon to help you get back on track after the holidays.

Classic. Black Minnetonka moccasins. They help me keep my focus on the warmer months to come.

Raw wood. You can almost smell it can’t you?  The simplicity of the design and use of a single material in this space says it all.  http://remash.tumblr.com/

The Stockings Were Hung

December 23, 2013

Well, I thought about passing Buddy’s Christmas stocking down to Jaxon but decided on a new direction. Something more fitting. A new Wigwam wool crew sock seemed the ticket. In charcoal wool…a simplequietmodern twist on the natural classic, an all time favorite of mine. So, he can nod off for the night…visions of sugarplums or liver treats dancing in his head…comfortably knowing that there’s a suitable receptacle for some treats from Santa.

Merry Christmas.

There’s still time…

December 12, 2013

to get that hand knit gift cast on, cast off and wrapped up before Christmas. Start with some giant sticks and some giant merino yarn from Loopy Mango, add the simplest knit or purl stitch and a couple of hours. Et voila….a little Christmas magic. Who on your list wouldn’t love a scarf , wrap or throw with this much style and panache? It’ll go so quickly you might want to knock one out for yourself as well.
