Already?

August 26, 2016

Yep, it’s hard to believe, but Jaxon is turning four. And, If you thought I might finally get a picture to commemorate the occasion, think again. It’s like trying to ask a tornado to sit still and look at the camera. While he knows exactly what he’s doing…he thinks it’s pretty funny putting me through the motions. And, it is. Good picture or not, there will definitely be treats. Biscuits for him and Brown Sugar Pavlova for everyone else. Baby Hambone Jaxon 3000…Happy Birthday to you.

Photo and recipe:http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/three-layer-berry-and-brown-sugar-pavlova-354211  I’ve made a couple of adjustments to this recipe to simplify things. As abundant as berries have been I used a combination of them all; raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and blackberries. When making the meringue layers you might find it easier to pipe or spread them directly onto parchment and simply peel the parchment from the bottoms when they’re cooled rather than using the suggested pan technique. It’s a bit difficult getting those layers out of the pan, even with the parchment. The end result will be much more attractive. You may want to keep this as a “go to” celebration cake, it’s that good.

For your four legged family members, why not knock out a batch of these Buddy Biscuits? There have been no complaints here either…ever. https://simplequietmodern.com/2012/01/30/ruff-ruff/

C’mon Jax

August 26, 2015

Is it too much to ask?  Just a quick pic to chronicle his birthday. Yep…Baby Hambone Jaxon 3000 is three years old. It might be easier if he wasn’t so black…or, if you were better able to distinguish one end from the other. Maybe if he stopped spinning like the Tasmanian Devil…or at the most basic, if he’d just look at the camera. Then it dawned on me. It was that Puli sense of humor at work, playing me like a Strad.

It goes without saying…

January 5, 2015

there’s gonna be cake. What celebration would be complete without it? And today, on the occasion of simplequietmodern completing its third year, this Walnut Variation, found on Food 52, seems to be the perfect combination of cake and dacquoise. A toast to you today as well…my readers, followers and friends…who take the time to stop by, get inspired, leave a comment and inspire me. I’m always surprised by what articles or photographs have been the most popular and favored by you each year. In 2014 it looks like you’ve surprised me again with black fences, quinoa kale and pear salad and baby Jaxon. So with a pop of the cork let’s see what year four has in store.

Another year over…

January 1, 2014

and a new one just begun.* The perfect time to be grateful for the good of the last year and set forth on a new and creative path for the next twelve months. Not one prone to the making and breaking of resolutions, I have always found that committing things to paper…notes, bits of inspiration, plans for upcoming projects, events or personal goals…can not only organize your thoughts, but gives you a resource to refer back to and evaluate your progress. A hardbound sketchbook or journal is always my simplequietmodern must have, although a designated project pad can do the trick. Keep it handy to jot down a thought, tuck in a bit of inspiration or flip back to enjoy each progressive step. The clock for 2014 has started ticking. On your mark….get set….

top to bottom

The classic Braun travel alarm clock ,now in gray, will help keep track of those fleeting minutes at home or away. http://needsupply.com/mens/new/classic-bnc002-clock-in-grey.html

What could have been a disaster rose from the ashes of a failed project to become Koishi one… one big, thick and richly textured linen blanket.

This sculpture greets and inspires me daily. Created completely of recycled LA Times newsprint, it brings home the idea that the great beauty can be found in the most humble material.

The found nests in my yard pale in comparison to this Australian example captured by my friend Kirsten Johnstone. It’s easy to see how it’s texture, form and structure caught her architects eye. http://www.kirstenjohnstone.com/blog/

The best part of my everyday…the “Hambone” Jaxon. The full-out belly laughs he induces daily are the best gift one could hope to receive.

Staring me down from a basket on the corner of my desk, these two yarns in gray and olive seemed to want to work together. Looking good so far.

The beginnings of a great Winter salad of Farro, roasted red grapes and red onions. I’ll post the simplified Martha recipe soon to help you get back on track after the holidays.

Classic. Black Minnetonka moccasins. They help me keep my focus on the warmer months to come.

Raw wood. You can almost smell it can’t you?  The simplicity of the design and use of a single material in this space says it all.  http://remash.tumblr.com/

It’s a miracle…

December 2, 2012

and it’s a boy! How this happened is just bigger than I could have imagined. Grandson of Jack, son of Jaxx…brother of my Buddy, nearly a twin (11 years later) right down to the tiny white tuft on that ball of black fluff. Unbelievable. And, I am unbelieveably grateful. Baby Jaxon.

one in a million

July 28, 2012

And, he came running to what seemed like a million pet names; Buddy  Buckwheat   Buttski   Budinski   Punkin  Punkin Pie   Punkin Donuts   Monkey   Monkey Butt   MonkeyPants   Monks   Schlooks   Schlookie …always with a shake, a spin, a wiggle, a nudge, a push or a big Eskimo Kiss. He came in a handful of black fluff with a gumdrop nose (wanting to be boss) and went out (I hope) happy, knowing how much he was loved ( and that he was boss). He touched everyone who met him with his unique style, personality and charisma and he never forgot those he met. Just the mention of someone’s name had his tail wagging and him waiting at the door…” ROAD TRIP!!!?  Starbucks!!!?  Grandma’s!!!? ”  I waited so long for him and got so caught up in the fun we were having…I never entertained the thought of saying goodbye…never fully understanding that I was being touched so profoundly. I can’t stop crying. I can’t speak. Still, I will be forever grateful. Bud and I had a deal. I took care of him…he took care of me…it  was a simple deal and it worked.  Goodbye.  My Buddy…my good boy…my heart.
