Doesn’t it always come?

February 26, 2014

Spring…yes, it does eventually get here. Patience is key as Spring is officially still weeks away. This experimental watercolor by Lourdes Sanchez reminds me how faint washes of color appear through the wet melting gray that was winter. A peak of blue through the heavy skies…the pinking of buds awakening in a monotonous landscape…the slow greening of moss with the help of a little sun.

One minute…

January 29, 2014

you feel as if you are living in a black and white photograph. The daylight (or lack of it) looks the same at six A.M. as it does at noon and then again at six P.M. It’s still colder than cold and the snow…well, it’s still coming. Then a day like today greets you with not only its bone chilling temperatures, but skies clear and  sun so bright, reflecting off of all that snow, that you have to wonder if you haven’t crossed over. Still, we managed to get through another January, but not without some simplequietmodern help. A few low bowls of forced grass or the freshness and simplicity of a handful of white tulips can bring to mind that there is a light at the end of this dark tunnel we call Winter. Both can be had for just a couple of bucks which is good to know as we head into February.

wait . And, while Spring is taking it’s good ‘ol time getting here you might need to help things along. Some sunny yellow parrot tulips should do until the sun peaks out. Simple enough.yelprrtF

Take a deep breath.

You can smell it. Spring …the Earth waking up.Time for a big stretch and to clear out Winter’s congestion…first in your environment which will precipitate a release of your physical congestion. It’s time for some fresh air…a fresh approach…a fresh project…a fresh outlook.yelcarn6Flamb_garnista_

Slowly awakening

March 2, 2013

Once I’ve made it through January and February I can breathe a little easier. There may still be a bit of Winter to deal with, but once March rolls in we can see the promise of Spring…like the light at the end of Winter’s long dark tunnel. Even before we get into the forcing of flowery branches we have the option of bringing indoors the earliest signs of the earth waking back up. Bits of moss and lichen seem the first to emerge as the snow melts off, bright spears of dogwood follow, reminding us that yes, things will be green again. And, their appeal could not be more simplequietmodern. If you are lucky enough to gather them locally, great. If not, Terrain offers both of these branch selections, harvested from the Pacific Northwest, by post.lichenmoss_24900409_001_g_terrnmosslichen_24900409_001_d_terrCopy of Lichenvase_24900409_001_a_terrCopy of yeldogwd_27805530_001_b_terrn http://www.shopterrain.com/stems-branches/

Nothing easier,really.

May 25, 2012

There is nothing easier for a spring or summer dessert than this. Three ingredients…count them, three…and, really no prep. A trip to the farmer’s market for the strawberries and a reach into the pantry for some brown sugar and sour cream. Plate ’em up, dip and done.

A rough start…

May 8, 2012

for this stone colored cotton cap. I like the Graham pattern by Jennifer Adams so much I decided to cast one on for spring and summer.  Using this limestone colored Berocco Weekend, for its nuetrality and ease of care, I was hoping to have it completed in a couple of days. This being the 3rd cast on( can’t I count stitches or what?)…things seem to be back on track. Stay tuned for the finish.  https://simplequietmodern.wordpress.com/2012/04/11/smokey/

You say potato…

March 10, 2012

I say I can’t wait for summer. I need a fix now! Gather up a few redskins, some spring onions, a couple of hard boiled eggs, celery and radishes. You are all set my friend…while the potaoes are boiling you can prep  your vegetables and mix up that dressing. Toss it all together and you’ve got potato salad…winter for me is now officially over, no matter what the calendar says. SIMPLE. I love this alone for lunch…but hey, did someone say ribs???
