Reason to Celebrate
May 3, 2019
It’s May. And if that wasn’t reason enough to celebrate, this first weekend brings us both the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo. Like we needed an excuse for a delightful Bourbon cocktail or quick plate of Mexican. So, what’ll it be? Maybe both.

To Spring
March 18, 2018
No time like the present…middle of March…snow and ice up to here, still…and the official start of Spring just a few days away…to lighten up the cocktail menu. I was intrigued by a cocktail combination of Bourbon, lemon and tonic. So, I started with a glass of ice, a nice shot of Bourbon, a squeeze and drop of a lemon wedge and a topping off of tonic. The BLT. After the first sip I have to admit it was surprisingly fresh. Who knew? Especially when tonic is typically reserved for mixing with vodka or gin. Then the wheels started turning. Could the lily be gilt with the addition of St. Germaine? The answer is yes. The addition of 1/2 oz. of elderflower liquor is lovely. Either way, despite the weather, it tasted like Spring to me.

Cookies and Cocoa?
December 24, 2015
Maybe for Santa. Now that the decorations are up, the shopping is done and dinner for tomorrow is ready for the oven it’s time to relax with a Christmas Manhattan. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.
The perfect simplequietmodern Christmas cocktail. Fill a rocks glass about 2/3 with ice, add a couple shakes of bitters, 1/2 oz. of sweet vermouth and 2 1/2 oz. bourbon, a maraschino cherry crushed against the side of the glass and give it all a quick stir. Recipe by Andy Ward for Bon Appetite.
Merry Christmas!

I do know Jack…
June 8, 2013
can add a little “something” to a glass of Coke , Ginger Beer or maybe the filling of a Pecan Pie. But now that grilling season’s here it’s a key ingredient in a classic condiment redux. A creation of Burger Up in Nashville, Tennessee, their Jack Daniels Maple Ketchup is a fortified version of the cookout staple. Burgers, dogs and fries alike can benefit from this modern robust twist on my favorite Heinz 57. So who’s feeling like sliders?
If you’d like to receive it…
December 5, 2012
chances are you know someone who would like to receive it as well. Small personal indulgences are a great start when putting together your gift list. Most of us have what we want or need but sometimes hesitate when it comes to purchasing for ourselves something small that is pure pleasure. These are exactly the items we need to help get us through tough economic times…or really just take the edge off, no matter how simple. When gifted, items like those I have selected here are really most welcome. And, to make a simplequietmodern exercise of it, see if you can select an item that crosses age and gender lines and purchase in multiples. That was easy…check , check , check and check… four down…
